Engineering Spin-Orbit Coupling and Novel Quantum Phenomena in Two-Dimensional Materials (given in English)
ABSTRACT
Two-dimensional (2D) materials provide an ideal platform for engineering novel quantum phenomena by exploiting proximity effects and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this talk, we focus on recent advances in manipulating electronic and spin properties in graphene and phosphorene through proximity-induced SOC, and explore unconventional superconductivity in NbSe2 and altermagnetism in RuF4. In graphene, proximity effects lead to enhanced Rashba spin-orbit splitting, tunable spin textures, and novel charge-to-spin conversion mechanisms, controllable via twist angle, charge density waves, and ferroelectric polarization. These proximity-induced SOC effects impact spin relaxation rates and facilitate unconventional charge-to-spin conversion. In phosphorene, proximity effects can also modify the spin texture of hole bands, leading to changes in spin lifetime. Beyond proximity effects, we explore the intrinsic SOC and superconducting properties of NbSe2, highlighting the potential for unconventional pairing functions, including singlet-triplet mixing, and the emergence of topological phases tunable via Fermi-level doping. Furthermore, we discuss the emergence of altermagnetism in RuF4 monolayers, where SOC generates spin-momentum locking and weak ferromagnetism, revealing the interplay between magnetic order and spin-orbit interactions. Our study underscores the rich possibilities for designing advanced spintronic and quantum devices by leveraging both proximity-induced and intrinsic SOC phenomena in 2D materials.
We look forward to meet you over a cup of coffee or tea.
